As we settled down in our new apartment in Tulum, we reflected on the importance of rest and how it can impact our daily lives and business.
Did you know that there are actually 7 types of rest and not just physical rest?
We took a deep dive into this topic because in October 2022 we felt more and more drained although we got our ideal 7-8 hours of restful sleep.
We wondered how that happens.
That’s because sleep is just part of one type of rest—physical rest.
The 7 Types of Rest
There are actually 7 types of rest: physical, mental, sensory, creative, emotional, spiritual, and social.
Each type of rest is important for different aspects of our lives.
For example, social rest is the rest we get from being around life-giving people, while creative rest is the rest we get from appreciating the beauty of nature.
Rest deprivation can lead to decreased cognitive abilities and productivity. So it’s important to manage our energy levels and prioritize rest.
Rest deprivation is also key to regulating your weight and your overall well-being.
Here are some examples for each of the 7 types of rest:
Physical rest is both active and passive:
For active rest—stretching, yoga, and massage.
For passive rest—sleep, and take a nap during the day.
Mental rest
Do breaks, and take time to unplug from daily activities.
Sensory rest
Close your eyes for a few moments and concentrate on your breath
Unplug from electronics at the end of the day—min. 1 hour before you go to bed avoid any screen time.
Creative rest
Spend time in nature. Immerse yourself in natural landscapes, go for a swim, hike, or practice some forest bathing.
Emotional rest
Express your feelings every time that you feel you should, don’t hold them back.
Learn to say no and stop people-pleasing!
Pro tip: Journaling
Write down how you feel – whether you are having a hard time or are content and grateful.
Spiritual rest
Engage in something meaningful and greater than you. Prioritize what gives you a greater feeling of belonging. Be part of a purposeful community.
Social rest
Be mindful of whom you spend your time with. Avoid people who drain your energy and look for those who nourish your soul.
This weekend, think about which kind of rest you need to improve and commit to one little change toward a more balanced life.
What’s going on in our world
We settled down in a wonderful apartment in Tulum and are surrounded by so much inspiring beauty.
We decided to settle here for at least one more month and are currently working with a few wonderful coachees, helping them to improve their habits to have more energy and performance.
Currently, our morning routines look like this:
- we wake up at 6.30,
- drink lemon water, do 10 minutes of journaling and
- do our daily workout
- before having a powerful breakfast and starting our work.
We’ve been experimenting a lot with daily routines during the past 10 years. It sometimes changes a bit, but there are some non-negotiables that we keep wherever we go.
What does your morning look like? Anything you would like to improve?
Have a wonderful weekend and stay active!
