“Find balance.”
It’s one of the most common pieces of advice we hear—on LinkedIn, in self-help books, and from well-meaning friends. The message is clear: if you could just balance everything—work, fitness, relationships, self-care—you’d finally feel calm, happy, and in control.
But let me ask you this: has chasing balance ever actually made you feel balanced?
Probably not.
Here’s the truth no one tells you: balance is a myth.
Life isn’t a set of perfectly weighted scales. It’s a chaotic, ever-changing flow. And the harder you try to “balance” everything equally, the more stressed and stuck you feel.
At The Energy Lab, we don’t chase balance. We chase energy.
The Problem With Balance
The idea of balance sounds great in theory. It paints a picture of harmony: eight hours of work, eight hours of sleep, an hour at the gym, home-cooked meals, and time to meditate, journal, and take a bubble bath.
But real life isn’t that clean.
Work deadlines collide with family responsibilities. Your body craves rest, but your to-do list demands action. You want to prioritize fitness, but Netflix is calling your name after a long day.
And the guilt? Oh, the guilt. If you’re working, you feel guilty for not working out. If you’re with your spouse or family, you feel guilty for not working. If you’re resting, you feel guilty for not doing…everything.
Here’s the kicker: the more you try to balance everything perfectly, the more out of balance you feel. Because balance isn’t static. It’s dynamic. And trying to hold everything at equal weight is like trying to stand still on a surfboard in the middle of a wave.
You’ll end up exhausted—and probably soaking wet.

Energy Over Balance
So, if balance is a myth, what’s the alternative?
It’s simple: stop trying to balance, and start flowing energy.
Instead of thinking about balance as dividing your life into equal parts, think about it as managing the flow of your energy toward what matters most in the moment.
Sometimes, your energy needs to go into work because you’re building something important. Other times, your energy needs to go into your relationships because you’ve been distant. And sometimes—maybe more often than you think—it needs to go into rest because you’re running on empty.
Ketty and I call this the “Energy Through, Energy To” mindset. Energy flows through you, and you get to decide where it goes. It’s not about doing everything all the time. It’s about directing your energy toward what will bring you the most alignment, growth, or joy right now.
Letting Go of Balance
A few years ago, Ketty was trying to juggle everything. Work. Training 5 days/week at the gym. Being present with me. Staying social. Business trips every other week. It was “balanced” on paper, but in reality, it was a house of cards. One small gust—a missed deadline, a tweak in training, a personal conflict—and the whole thing came crashing down.
She needed weekends just to recover—not to truly enjoy them.
It wasn’t sustainable. And it wasn’t making her happy.
So, we shifted the focus. Instead of trying to do it all, she started asking, Where does my energy need to flow right now?
When work required more focus, she gave it her all—without guilt about skipping a few workouts. When I needed her, she showed up fully and unapologetically. When her body screamed for rest, she listened.
The result? More progress. Less stress. And the realization that chasing balance wasn’t the answer—flowing energy was.
How to Stop Chasing Balance
If you’re ready to stop chasing balance and start flowing energy, here’s where to begin:
1. Decide What Matters Most Right Now
Not everything can be a priority. A priority, by definition, is singular. Choose one, max. two areas that need your energy most this week. Ask yourself: What will bring me the most peace, growth, or joy?
2. Give Yourself Permission to Shift
Life isn’t static, and your priorities shouldn’t be either. What matters this week might change next week. That’s okay. Flow with it.
3. Let Go of Guilt
You don’t have to do it all. When you focus your energy on one area, you’re not “failing” in others—you’re aligning with what matters.
4. Create Energy Rituals
Build small habits that recharge your energy, no matter where it’s flowing. Think morning movement, midday breaks, or evening wind-downs. These rituals keep your energy steady, even when life feels chaotic.
5. Celebrate the Flow
Forget perfection. Progress is messy, and that’s part of the beauty. Celebrate every moment you align your energy with your values, no matter how small.
A Challenge for You
Here’s my challenge:
Write down all the areas of your life you’re trying to “balance” right now. Work. Fitness. Family. Social life. Rest.
Now, ask yourself: Where does my energy need to go today? This week?
Pick one area. Focus your energy there, and let the rest flow.
You might be surprised how much lighter you feel when you stop trying to juggle everything at once.
