Why a bad posture might ruin your sleep (and how to fix it)
My sleep was shit for years. Even to a point when I burnt out. Sure burnout is multi-layered and multi-faceted. It affects all levels—physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
But sleep plays a big role.
Because if you don’t recover and rejuvenate at night and work a high-demanding job during the day you burn the candle on both ends.
I felt muscle tension and discomfort every day. Especially in the neck, shoulders, and back. During the day I hardly noticed it. However, when I lay down to sleep, these tensions persisted and made it difficult for me to relax and fall asleep comfortably.
Over the years I had developed a hunch back despite an active and athletic lifestyle. I wasn’t aware of it. Because when I looked in the mirror my belly caught my attention.
I felt like I rarely experienced deep sleep, and I didn’t feel rested in the morning.
My breathing was often shallow. When I lay down and was about to fall asleep consistently I jolted up. I was never diagnosed with sleep apnea but I showed all the symptoms.
Sleep is the most important foundation for any kind of high performance and a productive day ahead. So I obsessed over it for years.
I found that consistently poor posture can disrupt the normal sleep architecture, preventing me from reaching deeper stages of sleep, such as REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, where the body and mind undergo essential restorative processes.
When the body is uncomfortable due to bad posture, it is more prone to waking up frequently during the night.
These sleep disturbances can lead to fragmented sleep and overall poorer sleep quality. Hence, low energy, poor decision-making, and shitty productivity.
But it doesn’t have to be that way…
