What is Emotional Management?

Emotional management, or emotion regulation, is the process of

  • recognizing,
  • understanding, and
  • effectively regulating

one’s own emotions in various situations.

It involves strategies and techniques that you can use to control the intensity, duration, and expression of your feelings.

Emotional management is essential for maintaining psychological well-being, undergoing personal change, and successfully navigating life’s challenges.

Let’s break down this 3-step process of emotional management…

The 3-Step Process to Manage Emotions like a Pro

  1. Recognizing:

    First, we need to recognize and identify our emotions as they arise.

    It involves being in tune with how you feel and being able to label and describe your emotional experiences. This can be a delicate matter, as many people grow up without anyone teaching them how to identify their own emotions.

  2. Understanding:

    Gaining insight into the causes and triggers of your emotions is important. Being aware of your triggers is a crucial first step. This tactic helps to interrupt negative emotions before they arise and drag you down into darkness.

    Understanding the underlying factors that contribute to your feelings helps you respond more thoughtfully.

    We found that Brené Brown’s “The Atlas of the Heart” (not affiliated) is exceptionally helpful to understand the nuances between thoughts, emotions, and feelings.

  3. Regulation Strategies:

    This involves utilizing various techniques to modulate or shift emotional states. Such strategies include cognitive reappraisal (altering the way you perceive a situation), distraction, deep breathing, mindfulness, and engaging in positive activities.

The 7 Most Effective Emotional Management Strategies

Navigating personal change can be emotionally challenging. Effective emotional management strategies will help you manage stress and maintain psychological well-being during times of transition.

Here’s how you can regulate your emotions in the context of personal change:

  1. Acknowledge Your Emotions:

    Recognize and validate your emotions without judgment. Accept that feeling a mix of emotions, including uncertainty and discomfort, is a natural part of the change process.

  2. Practice Self-Compassion:

    Be kind to yourself. Treat yourself with the same empathy and understanding you would offer to a friend facing a similar situation.

    Avoid self-criticism and negative self-talk. Replace harsh judgments with compassionate and encouraging inner dialogue.

    Stick to daily routines and prioritize self-care activities that nurture your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Creative outlets such as writing, crafting, or cooking have healing effects on the entire system.

What’s going on in our world

This last week has been a huge environmental change for us.

We went from the wild jungles and wonderful seas of the Pacific coast to one of the craziest cities in the world. This is our first week in Mexico City.
