Newton’s First Law of Motion, also known as the Law of Inertia, states that an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
Many say the first step is the hardest.
We disagree. Starting is easy. Enduring for years and years… That’s the real challenge when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle.
Not so when it’s imprinted in your identity.
Living healthy is easy if this is simply who you are.
- You exercise most days of the week because you love it.
- Eat a healthy meal 2-3x a day, not because you have to, but because you love the taste and don’t even think it’s “healthy” food. You say, “That’s what I eat.”
- You go to bed early and rise early in the morning to flow naturally with your circadian rhythm.
And many more habits that compound over time.
But how to get there?
That, my friend, is where it’s at.
You guessed it, it’s all about forming the right habits and routines.
But a habit is built over time—weeks and months.
So, in the beginning, you need to have discipline.
Discipline is the ultimate act of service to your future self.
“How do I develop discipline across different areas of my life, and for a fit and healthy lifestyle in particular?!?
We hear you.
Our perspective:
On a macro scale, you need to reframe discipline as an act of service to your future self.
Your future self is the key stakeholder in your life. No one cares more about your actions in the present than your future self. Every single hard thing you push yourself to do today compounds into the future.
On a micro-scale, you need to bring the after into the before.
Discipline is required when an action feels bad now but good later:
- Doing that hard workout
- Eating that healthy meal
- Doing that focused work
- Sitting down to meditate
- Getting to bed early
- Waking up on time
When you’re on the verge of ditching your goals when your mind starts playing tricks on you, convincing you that you can skip just this once, stop! Remind yourself how good it will feel after.
Bring the after into the before and change your life.
This is just a little perspective shift we also play with our coaching clients. Most of them know what to do better in their life—yet they don’t do it. Because:
There’s a mental guard—let’s call him Jim—securing the gateway to that better, healthier life who says “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you in. Maybe next time.”
But you know that there’s that ONE thing you need right now to get through the gate.
We’re confident that we can help you surpass Jim, and you can help us understand how to serve you better in achieving this.
That’s it for today.
Hope you enjoyed it (and learned something new).
As always, stay fit, stay active, and enjoy your life.
