I never thought that a bad posture can lead to poor health and performance.
I wasn’t even aware of my posture.
Of course, I noticed that I had a hollow back, and a slight belly, my shoulders had moved forward, and my neck stuck out like a vulture’s.
Well, I felt some back pain now and then and my shoulders were often tight from long hours of sitting in front of a computer.
But overall I felt ok. I mean I considered myself a sporty person.
Posture can lead to a variety of problems, both physical and mental.
Here are some of the main problems linked with bad posture:
1/ Musculoskeletal pain
Poor posture can lead to muscle strain and tension, particularly in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips. This can cause chronic pain and discomfort over time.
2/ Reduced flexibility
Bad posture can also reduce flexibility and range of motion, making it harder to perform daily activities and exercise.
3/ Poor circulation
When we slouch or hunch over, we can compress our internal organs and reduce blood flow to our extremities, leading to numbness and tingling.
4/ Digestive problems
Bad posture can also lead to digestive problems such as acid reflux and constipation. When we slouch, we can compress our digestive organs, making it harder for them to function properly.
5/ Headaches and fatigue
Poor posture can lead to tension headaches and fatigue as our muscles work harder to maintain an unnatural position.
6/ Decreased self-confidence
Finally, bad posture can also affect our mental state and self-confidence. When we slouch or hunch over, we may appear less confident and less assertive, which can affect our interactions with others.
I didn’t start caring about my posture until I had a real wake-up call.
One day, I experienced such severe lower back pain that I couldn’t even hold myself over the sink to wash my face after waking up.
Despite seeing multiple doctors and orthopedics, none of them could identify the cause or provide a solution to my problem.
However, my osteopath suggested that my hip flexors might be the cause of my pain and recommended that I work on my flat feet to create force straight from the ground.
I was a yoga teacher, and movement coach, and became obsessed with all things related to physical rehab, body mechanics, and posture.
I’ve come a long way to work through all my past injuries and misalignment but I can tell you it’s so worth it. It’s pure quality of life and freedom.
If you don’t know where to start—start here:
- Be aware of your posture: The first step to improving your posture is to be aware of it. Pay attention to how you sit, stand, and walk throughout the day.
- Sit correctly: When you sit for long hours each day, keep your feet flat on the floor, your back straight, and your shoulders relaxed. Make sure your chair is at the right height for your desk and adjust the height of your computer monitor to eye level.
- Exercise regularly: Exercise strengthens your muscles and improves your posture. Focus on exercises that target your hamstrings, core and deep core, back, and neck muscles. Stretching and mobility work is a must.
Remember:
Overall, maintaining good posture is important for our physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life.
